Used Selmer Radial Bb Trumpet - Boyde Hood Collection
The Selmer Radial sits in that sweet spot between French refinement and real-world versatility. Built in France in the early–mid 1970s, this Bb trumpet features a .462" medium-large+ bore and a focused, compact sound that still carries some color and warmth—equally at home in orchestra, wind ensemble, or studio work.
This example, serial 55xxx, comes in silver plate that’s essentially 100% intact, giving it a clean, modern look on the stand and under lights. The blow is open without feeling spread, with a secure center and an easy response that will feel familiar to artists coming from mainstream ML/ML+ setups.
Condition
The horn shows honest, well-cared-for use rather than hard miles:
-
Silver plate in excellent condition, no major wear
-
Small dimple dent on the bottom of the bell
-
Light surface scratching inside the bell
-
Evidence of possible historic repair work on the bell bow
-
Good compression; valves and slides move freely
Nothing here affects how it plays, but we’d rather be upfront so you know exactly what’s on the stand.
Provenance
This Radial comes from the private collection of Boyde Hood, longtime member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where it lived for over 30 years. It’s a proper working artist’s horn with a serious pedigree, not an anonymous shop find.
