New York Bach Stradivarius D Trumpet

From the Boyde Hood Collection

A rare Vincent Bach Bach New York D trumpet from the Boyde Hood Collection, built during one of the most historically important periods of Vincent Bach production.

This instrument features a medium-small MS bore measuring .450" and a 211 bell, a configuration associated with a focused, brilliant, and efficient response. The 211 bell is one of Bach’s classic C/D trumpet bell designs, known for a tighter and more compact character than broader C trumpet bells such as the 236 or 239. In D trumpet form, that gives this horn the clarity and presence sought by orchestral artists for baroque, classical, and chamber repertoire.

The serial number, 83xx, places this trumpet in the late 1940s, before Bach’s move to Mt. Vernon. Instruments from this era carry a particular appeal for artists and collectors: hand-built New York craftsmanship, early Bach design language, and the unmistakable character of a small-key trumpet made before these instruments became standardized into modern production categories.

This example is finished in lacquer and remains in excellent vintage condition, with wear consistent with age and professional ownership. The lacquer shows some expected wear, but the instrument presents beautifully overall and is in great condition for a New York Bach D trumpet of this age.

Its provenance adds another layer of significance. As part of the Boyde Hood Collection, this D trumpet comes from the holdings of a longtime Los Angeles Philharmonic trumpet artist and one of the great orchestral musicians of his generation.
