1947 Holton C Trumpet

Formerly Owned by Gerard Schwarz
From the Boyde Hood Collection

A rare 1947 Holton C trumpet formerly owned by trumpeter, conductor, and composer Gerard Schwarz and later acquired by Boyde Hood, offered here from the Boyde Hood Collection.

This instrument is documented on Robb Stewart’s museum page on Holton C trumpets, where Stewart identifies it as the later of two historically interesting Holton C trumpets associated with major orchestral artists. According to Stewart, Boyde Hood acquired this trumpet directly from Gerard Schwarz several decades ago.

Built by Frank Holton & Co. in 1947, this C trumpet features a bore measuring approximately .458" and a bell that was considered large for C trumpets of the period. Stewart notes that the wider bell flare gives these Holton C trumpets a broader, darker tone than the traditional French-style C trumpets often associated with mid-century orchestral playing.

Gerard Schwarz’s remarkable career as a trumpeter, conductor, and musical leader gives this instrument a compelling provenance. Schwarz studied with William Vacchiano, performed with the American Brass Quintet and American Symphony Orchestra, and later served as co-principal trumpet of the New York Philharmonic before becoming one of America’s most prominent conductors.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a vintage Holton C trumpet with documented ownership by Gerard Schwarz and later placement in the Boyde Hood Collection.
