New-Old Stock Dell’Ossa Trumpet Straight Mute
The Dell’Ossa Trumpet Straight Mute brings back a distinctive Italian mute design with a fascinating connection to one of the great sounds of 20th-century orchestral trumpet playing.
Made in Milan, Italy, the Dell’Ossa is based on the original straight mute associated with legendary Boston Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Roger Voisin. The design became particularly known among trumpet players for the muted sound associated with Debussy’s Fêtes, a passage that has long served as a reference point for color, clarity, and atmosphere in the French orchestral tradition.
These particular Dell’Ossa mutes also carry their own professional provenance. They were purchased by former Atlanta Symphony Orchestra trumpeter Larry Black, who personally corked and fitted them for use with standard Bb and C trumpet bells before they were acquired by Bob Reeves Brass.
The Dell’Ossa produces a focused, compact muted sound with exceptional character. Its voice has presence and definition without becoming overly bright or brittle, making it especially well suited to orchestral repertoire where the mute needs to create a distinct color while remaining integrated with the ensemble.
For artists searching beyond the sound of a conventional modern straight mute, the Dell’Ossa offers something increasingly rare: a historically inspired tonal color with a direct connection to the orchestral trumpet tradition.
