It’s the kind of horn most players only ever see after it’s been replated, overhauled, or ridden hard for decades. This one wasn’t. It lived its life in the hands and closets of people who knew exactly what they had.

The horn comes from the collection of Boyde Hood, longtime member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Boyde acquired it in the 1980s. The original owner—a piano tuner—bought this Committee and a New York Bach at the same time, preferred the Bach, and essentially parked the Martin in a closet. When Boyde picked it up, he already had another Committee he reached for when he wanted that classic ballad sound, so this one saw very little use, even though he loved how this one played. By his estimate, it’s had maybe 45 minutes of playing time in the last forty years.

The result is a rare mix: a medium-bore Committee with original gold plate, original parts, and no visible repair work. The horn plays with the familiar Committee feel—flexible, colorful, and a little bit “loose” in all the right ways—but with the efficiency and stability you expect from a well-preserved medium bore. The gold plate shows light, honest wear with silver just beginning to show through in a few spots, but there are no dents, no signs of heavy buffing, and no patches. The 3rd valve brace shows an old solder acid stain, but does not appear to have been re-soldered. The instrument has been looked over by Robb Stewart and presents as a clean, original example from one of the most desirable Committee periods.

Condition

Original gold plate with custom engraving, excellent overall

Silver beginning to show through the gold in some areas from age and handling

No dents, no visible bell or bow repairs

3rd valve brace shows historic solder acid staining, not a fresh joint

Valves and slides are smooth with good compression

No evidence of replating, relacquer, or replaced major parts

https://trumpetmouthpiece.com/products/exceptional-martin-committee-bb-trumpet-medium-bore-custom-engraving-gold-plate-boyde-hood-collection
